Description:
Textbook in PDF format
This book covers the material for a course in mathematical physics at the advanced undergraduate level. The general philosophy adopted has been to maintain the emphasis on problem solving of the Mathews and Walker book (Mathematical Methods of Physics by J. Mathews and R. Walker, W. A. Benjamin, Inc.)
This book on math methods is excellent. It was based on the book by Mathews and Walker but was simplified to make it more accessible. The problems are also great, fun, and educational. This book does a solid job of covering the basics. Also included is an excellent bibliography with advice on which books and chapters are best for further study on various topics.
This book together with the book by Mathews and Walker, Mathematical methods of Physics, really teach you to calculate. It is not a book on theory. It is a book that will teach you what to do to solve an integral eqaution or even to calculate some difficult integral.
Lorella M. Jones was a celebrated Mathematical Physicist. She wrote this book to make the material of Mathematical Methods of Physics by Mathews and Walker clearer to physics graduate and upper level students. The chapters on complex variable are particularly clear. This book is a treasure.
Contents: 1 - vectors and matrices, 2 - abstract formalism of vector spaces (green's function and perturbation theory), 3- ode (including an excellent section on various first and second order equations you should know as well as power series solutions, legendre function, bessel functions, hypergeometric functions), 4- function spaces and expansions in orthogonal sets (including sturm-liouville equations, and a nice section on general ladder operators), 5- infinite series, 6 - evaluation of integrals, 7-10 four chapters of complex analysis, 11 - integral equations, and finally 12 - pde.
