Description
It’s an honor to present English subtitles for Sukeban Deka III, timed to the HD remaster, courtesy of Toei Channel!
I’ve been a fan of Sukeban Deka for over a decade now. I first discovered the series in the mid 2010s through my Japanese language learning journey. I learned that “deka” was slang for detective or cop, and it sent me down a rabbit hole of media with that word in the title. Among them was Sukeban Deka, which I found on some random pirate site. That first episode hooked me immediately. The premise, a delinquent schoolgirl fighting crime with a steel yo-yo, was absurdly over-the-top, like a fake parody TV show you’d find inside a movie, and it pulled me right in. I’ve been a fan ever since, watching all three seasons and the movies.
Fast forward to 2018, and Sukeban Deka II had just finished being fully fansubbed. The community was buzzing with word that subs for III would follow. There had been rumblings for a while from different people and groups saying they had plans to sub the series and that they were gonna announce it publicly one day, but the years kept passing with zip, nada, zilch. The fact that parts one and two were fully subbed, but not part three, always felt wrong to me, leaving the very last entry of the series incomplete.
By early 2023, I had already become a fansubber and had just finished subbing Abunai Deka. I moved on to another Sukeban-themed show, Hana no Asuka-gumi, and felt confident enough to tackle the coveted Sukeban Deka III. That’s when I finally pulled a Thanos: “Fine, I’ll do it myself.” I’ll admit I was nervous starting such an ambitious show as a solo subber and worried it would be a bumpy ride, but thankfully it all worked out fine in the end.
This project originally took me from late March through early September 2023, working entirely solo on translation, timing, and QC. The translation was done from scratch by ear, with help from a Japanese fan blog that had transcribed some lines and provided helpful context for many of the episodes. The subs were made for the DVD release in simple .SRT format, but they’ve now been updated with numerous retranslations, fixes, and improvements, and converted to .ASS format with better typesetting.
The most challenging translation aspects were the Buddhist elements and religious figures that appear throughout this third series. Sukeban Deka III takes a much more fantastical direction than its predecessors, incorporating folklore, ninjas, and supernatural elements, which made handling those aspects an interesting challenge.
While some may consider this the “black sheep” of the trilogy because of its tonal shift, I find the fantastical elements intriguing on their own. The chemistry between the three Kazama sisters is something special, and I’d argue their dynamic even surpasses the beloved trio from Sukeban Deka II.
A new translation of the entire first Sukeban Deka TV series was released by FlameSubs last year. You can also find a torrent of my scrub of the second TV series here, which builds on the work of The Skaro Hunting Society, improving the translation and converting their hardsubs to softsubs. Of course, I’d be remiss not to thank FortMax for providing HDTV encodes of all three seasons from Toei Channel.
With this release, all of Sukeban Deka is now fully available in 720p HD with English subs! Enjoy!
