But things turned out to be more complicated. Most people involved in enencoding and interested in anime production know that Makoto Shinkai’s studio created this anime in native 1920x1080 4:4:4 bt709 10-bit. For subsequent home video releases, it was converted to 1920x1080 4:2:0 bt709 8-bit. The UHD HDR version was also based on the same 1920x1080 4:4:4 bt709 10-bit master, which was artificially expanded to DCI-P3 and subsequently converted to HDR, and also upscaled to 2160 (4K). This DCP apparently contains an intermediate master, already converted to DCI-P3, but still natively 1080p. The lighting and hues, as well as the overall DCP gamma, correspond to DCI-P3 and are very similar when comparing screenshots to their UHD HDR version without upscaling. In other words, when clipping at the bt709 level, we experience color clipping in areas where the color gamut was artificially expanded to the DCI-P3 limits. This is especially noticeable in red. Therefore, I again used the bt2020 matrix. This allows for the full P3 color space to be accommodated while maintaining the D65 white point. Due to the similarity of some parameters between CIE 1931 and bt2020, all of this combined makes it possible to reproduce the cinematic viewing experience with minimal changes on home video.
