This is undoubtedly the most seductive song about death. At Alan Parsons' suggestion, Clare Torry was invited to perform the vocals, which turned out incredibly beautiful. She recorded several versions of the part in different vocal positions and at varying volume levels, which were compiled onto the master tape. Despite her improvisation in the studio, Torry was not credited as the songwriter, though many now believe she deserved it.
Instead, Torry received double the price for her workβa whopping 30 pounds! Torry apparently wasn't offended, as she reprised her vocals for Roger Waters' London shows in 1987 and for Pink Floyd's Knebworth concert in 1990. She then earned significantly more money when the Pink Floyd composition was first used for a television commercial for Nurofen painkillers (presumably referring to Nurofen flu). With approval from Wright, who, as the composer, had final say, the advertising agency hired Torry to recreate the original. She subsequently received a royalty check every time the commercial aired.
Early live versions, performed under the title "The Mortality Sequence," sounded rather ominous; They featured a speech by journalist and moral crusader Malcolm McGeridge, as well as taped Bible readings with organ accompaniment. The composition returned to Pink Floyd's live set in 1988. On compact disc, "Great Gig" seamlessly transitions into the next song, thus disguising the separation between the two sides of the vinyl disc.
