The story of Riff cannot be told without making reference to Pappo's previous career as one of the first musicians who played heavy rock in South America. In the late '60s, during short periods of time (not more than one year), he was member of two pop rock bands, Los Abuelos de la Nada and Los Gatos.
In 1970, Pappo started a new project called Pappo's Blues, which had a much different musical direction with clear influences from Hendrix and early Black Sabbath. He recorded seven albums between 1970 and 1978.
During the '70s, he also traveled several times to England where he met John Bonham (Led Zeppelin), Peter Green (Fleetwood Mac), the members of UFO and The Heavy Metal Kids, and most important of all, Lemmy Kilmister. Pappo claims to have witnessed the formation of the classic Motörhead line-up in 1976, and some people say that he even played with them as a guest in some gigs. The truth is that he toured England with Peter Green's band in 1978, and he also lived for six months in Hamburg (Germany) where he played at the Top 10 club.
In 1980, Pappo thought it was time for a change, so he decided to form a new group named Riff. The first Riff show took place on November 14th 1980 and it was known as "Adiós Pappo's Blues - Bienvenido Riff" (Farewell Pappo's Blues - Welcome Riff). The night started with Pappo's Blues
