Textbook in PDF format The purpose of this book is to provide an introduction to the analysis techniques used in the design of linear feedback control systems. The emphasis is on both classical and matrix methods. After introducing general state space systems and input-output systems, design and analysis techniques are then presented in a building-block sequence, with a thorough analysis of first-order systems, second-order systems, higher order systems, and general state space systems. In addition to classical topics, such as Root Locus, Bode design methods, and Nyquist stability, this text also presents eigenvalue placement and observer design techniques for linear systems, as well as results on systems with uncertain inputs, systems with uncertain parameters, analogue computer implementations, and redesign for digital implementations. This book is designed for one-semester introductory junior- or senior level control systems courses and assumes a background on the student’s part to include dynamics and differential equations. We recognize that many schools have introduced junior-level dynamic systems courses that focus on preliminary material dealing with system modeling (mechanical, thermal, electrical, etc.) and basic eigenvalue and Laplace transform analysis techniques for linear dynamical systems. These courses, necessarily, have time for at most a brief introduction to control systems. However, many schools do not have such courses, and the senior-level control systems course must provide the basic material. This text is designed to accommodate either situation. In particular, although this book’s primary focus is on classical and modern control systems, it also contains basic background material associated with a Dynamic Systems course, so that such a course is not a prerequisite
