Description:

Textbook in PDF format This book is your graduate level entrance into battery, fuel cell and solar cell research at synchrotron x-ray sources and free electron lasers. Materials scientists find numerous examples for the combination of electrochemical experiments with simple and with highly complex x-ray scattering and spectroscopy methods. The first edition of this book was received very well by researchers worldwide. Worldcat.org shows it is available in 774 libraries as of 2023. De Gruyter asked me whether I was willing to write a second edition. Meanwhile, researchers have made great progress with the use of synchrotron methods for electrochemical systems. There exists plenty of new material that should be included in a book like this. However, as the apparatus at the synchrotron beamlines and end stations becomes more developed and integrated, there comes a lack of transparency along with increased user friendliness. The new systems are not so open anymore. For researchers new to the topic, such high integration of the end station apparatus will pose a general difficulty. I think it is there fore necessary to keep “the early stage stuff” in a scholarly book. Over 10 years ago, I visited my colleague, the Deputy Director of the Large Coherent Light Source (LCLS) in Menlo Park. Back then, I was interested in how the free electron laser there could be useful for my studies on photoelectrochemical cells. He gave me a tour through thedungeons of the LCLS. This second edition includes a new Section 5.3 on the free elec tron lasers and electrochemical experiments performed there. Soon, more free electron lasers (FEL) were built and went in operation in several places in the world.
