"Quality Control" was a wartime title used in Great Britain to denote the statistical method of interpreting certain data as a basis for action. At that time a pressing need was felt for increased production and it was considered that a good deal of increase in effective production could be obtained by cutting out the waste in materials, man-hours, machine-hours, etc., caused by the manufacture of defective parts, i.e., rejects, and the further waste caused in the rectification of some of the rejects
