Encode Comparison vs. Source
Notes:
An updated release of this early 00s Dark Sci-Fi film which utilized a hybrid production of both 2D animation and 3DCG.
The previous releases suffered from severe rainbowing and dot-crawl as well as frame blends particularly during scene transitions. Light dot-crawl removal and derainbowing was employed as well as reductions in frame blends for cleaner playback. However, there still exists substantial residual ghosting in the source which could not be corrected for. Further treatments to reduce or eliminate haloing, chroma noise, as well adaptive grain-matching of macroblocking in darker regions were applied. VFR to preserve smooth scrolling ED credits. See comparison screenshots above.
Original subtitles taken from XC’s release with additional QC by me to correct the following:
Fix several remaining grammar/spelling errors
Fully retimed the script
Add several missing lines and correct a few others
Separate and join certain lines to improve flow
Unstyled subtitles also included for those that prefer them. R2J DVD extras are also included which showcase many featurettes from the voice cast, several PVs, as well as a notable pilot movie for which the designs of all monsters were hand-drawn vs. their 3DCG depiction in the main film.
