--------------
Join us for a special performance by celestial music pioneer Laraaji, celebrating the 45th anniversary of his landmark 1980 collaboration with Brian Eno, Ambient 3: Day of Radiance.
First released on Eno’s Obscure imprint, the album remains a cornerstone of ambient and new age music, merging Laraaji’s electrified zither with shimmering cascades of resonance that continue to inspire generations of listeners. Accompanied by longtime collaborator, sound healer and reiki master, Arji OceAnanda, Laraaji will revisit this seminal work alongside selections from his vast and luminous catalog.
Inside the historic sanctuary, the performance will feature immersive architecturally-mapped projections, transforming the space into a living audio-visual environment.
Laraaji
Born Edward Larry Gordon in Philadelphia in 1943, Laraaji is a visionary musician and spiritual guide whose prolific output has made him a central figure in ambient and new age music. His long, meditative soundscapes are built from electronically modified zither, hammered dulcimer, kalimba, synthesizers, and voice, often enriched with natural sounds.
After studying music and theater at Howard University and pursuing acting in New York, a turn toward Eastern mysticism led him to electrify a pawnshop zither and develop the radiant style that caught Brian Eno’s attention in Washington Square Park in the late 1970s. Their resulting collaboration, Ambient 3: Day of Radiance (1980), became one of the defining works of the genre.
Laraaji has since released dozens of albums, from early home-recorded meditation tapes to expansive collaborations with Bill Laswell, Audio Active, and Blues Control. Beyond performance, he is known worldwide for conducting Laughter Meditation workshops, bringing joy and transcendence to communities around the globe.
Arji OceAnanda Cakouros, is a Sound Healer, Musician, Usui Reiki Master, Dreamwork Teacher with a private counseling/healing practice based in Niskayuna, NY. Since 2008, she has enjoyed the deep joy and honour of collaborating with Blissmate Sw.Laraaji NadaBrahmananda in many venues worldwide, offering Healing Sound events and Laughter Immersion experiences, as well as a great variety of musical performances in conjunction with other artists. She is included in the Fall 2011 release of That Healing Feeling, a collaborative recording made with Laraaji and Blues Control musicians Lea Cho and Russ Waterhouse, which received international attention and acclaim, resulting in an eight country tour in 2012. OceAnanda has also served as faculty for both the prestigious international Sound Healers Intensive in Colorado for its last nine years, developed by internationally recognized Sound Healing Pioneer Jonathan Goldman (for which she and Laraaji released a highly acclaimed 2-CD set entitled Laughter Consciousness), as well as on the faculty for the Sacred Sounds Institute Intensive held annually at Olympic National Park, Washington state created by the multi-talented pioneer Sound Healer Vickie Dodd. Other releases with Laraaji include a trilogy of live concert events offered as single CDs or a 3-CD set. They were recorded at DubLab in Los Angeles (Nov. 2013), the historic Bijoux Theatre in Knoxville (2014 BIG EARS festival), and most recently at the Indianapolis Museum of Art (May 2014). Additionally, OceAnanda's In a Celestial Cathedral chant cd with drone by Laraaji, and their recent Into the Peace Garden July 2016 Colorado concert recording has enjoyed an enthusiastic response. Most recently she is featured on a collaborative release with Laraaji and synth trio, Dallas Acid entitled Arrive Without Leaving... named one of the top ten new releases of 2018 by PITCHFORK
