Nowadays, distributed generation and microgrids (MGs) are becoming an important research line because of their peculiar characteristics. MGs are composed of small power sources which can be renewable, placed near customer sites. Moreover, they have the inherent property of islanding: the disconnection of either the MG from the main grid or a part of a MG from the rest of the MG. Power electronics (PE) is an enabling technology that has found very interesting and important applications in recent years. This technology is associated with efficient and controlled conversion of electric power from one form to another. PE applications cover a wide range from a few watts to megawatts. Power electronics convert and control power and are an essential part of many electronic devices and systems. Increasingly, power
converters need to operate over widely varying operating conditions (voltage, current and power level), which can degrade their performance. In many applications, power converters are also being interconnected to form power systems. This is challenging as the converters may have to operate in various configurations. In order to ensure best performance, power converters and systems need to adapt to the operating conditions by adjusting topology, component values or control characteristics.
PE has therefore become an important part of modern microgrids. Not only are many storage and distributed generation systems connected to the microgrid via PE
converters, many of the modern loads use some sort of power conversion to ensure high-efficiency and high-performance operation. The sudden surge in the application of PE in the past three decades has been mostly due to the progress in power semiconductor switches, which in conjunction with other basic electronic devices as seen in this book allow power conversion between different electrical forms. Also progressin digital controllers has allowed implementation of complex control algorithms that are needed for control of PE converters in different applications.
The aim of this book is to allow readers obtain basic knowledge of PE converters, their topologies, and their use in microgrid applications. In this book, first the principles of power conversion are briefly presented. A brief overview of different power semiconductor switches and converter topologies provides insight into the operation of these converters. Some of the most used structures in microgrids, including two-level and three-level neutral point-clamped converters, are
investigated in more depth. Students and power regulation experts will find this book to be a concise, timely introduction to the technical aspects of microgrids and their components
