Description:
Offerto da Winds Of Re:Sub
Uzumaki
This is one of three different Uzumaki releases we made, featuring Italian subtitles from BBF (untouched) and English subtitles taken directly from the Blu-ray (more info below).
Despite all the technical issues in the animation, this remains a peculiar anime that was definitely worth encoding with some extra care.
HEVC Version
Audio: FLAC 2.0 JAP / ENG
Subtitles: ITA (BBF), ITA (old style BBF), ENG, ENG SDH, ENG Signs & Songs
Video:
This version was made to keep the file size reasonable while preserving the anime’s original look, without perfectly matching the same level of grain as the source.
A perfect descale (if I may say so) was applied, making the lines sharper and fixing several visual issues. The filterchain included detail-preserving denoise, dehalo, and finally a light regrain to cover the ugly banding.
Edges were left untouched, even though they look quite rough, since I assume they were intentional.
Starting from episode 2, where production issues became more evident, the descale changes slightly. While episode 2 uses the same parameters as episode 1, episodes 3 and 4 already show some additional post-processing introduced by the studio itself. As a result, the descale wasn’t as “perfect,” but it was necessary to adapt it. To minimize potential artifacts, slightly different parameters were applied to each episode in this stage.
AV1 Version (this one)
Audio: FLAC 2.0 JAP / ENG
Subtitles: ITA (BBF), ITA (old style BBF), ENG, ENG SDH, ENG Signs & Songs
Video:
This version was made to get the best of both worlds: reasonable file size and matching grain.
Using the exact same filterchain as the HEVC encode, this version slightly reduces file size by encoding with SVT-AV1-HDR.
An external film grain layer was added without increasing the file size. It can be toggled on or off on supported players.
For example, on mpv you can enable it by adding this to your config file:
vf=format:film-grain=yes
film-grain=yes
vd-lavc-film-grain=cpu
If your player does not support external film grain, it will most likely be enabled by default.
This synthetic grain aims to match the original one without affecting file size, though it’s not exactly the best type of grain out there.
FFV1 Version
Audio: FLAC 2.0 JAP / ENG
Subtitles: ITA (BBF), ITA (old style BBF), ENG, ENG SDH, ENG Signs & Songs
Video:
A lossless version built from a slightly different filterchain, with a higher-quality grain added directly through VapourSynth to match the original.
In my opinion, doing a low-crf HEVC encode to preserve all that grain would have been pointless, resulting in 12-20GB per episode, even larger than the BD itself.
So instead, I decided to release the FFV1 version directly, so anyone can make their own re-encodes or mini encodes according to their needs.
