Altered States premiered as a 70mm blow-up release, with a 6-track mix with a baby boom configuration, in Warner's short-lived Megasound format, which featured enhanced bass relative to other contemporary formats. A more typical matrixed Dolby Stereo (LCRS) mix was used for 35mm showings in most venues. Due to that format's limitations, its bass reproduction is much more limited.
Criterion's release includes a 2.0 track and a 5.1 track. The former very clearly appears to be the Dolby Stereo mix, but the latter's provenance is a bit less obvious. It appears to be the same track used by Warner Bros. on their previous releases of this film. It sounds very good, with clearly discrete surrounds (similar, but non-identical) and deep punchy bass. I strongly suspect that it's derived from the 70mm 6-track mix with minimal modifications, but don't have anything to back that up. It might be a very slight remix.
Plaion's 5.1 track is the same, minus one lossy patch, and their 2.0 track appears to be a mixdown with some added EQ.
