Back after a short break with one of our all time favorites and an absolute classic well ahead of its time.
Retail HDR10+ privately sourced, synced and ported over to the UHD Blu-ray. Gamma was slightly off on the WEB but the color otherwise matched perfectly allowing us to fix the gamma in the dynamic metadata in order to match the UHD BD using professional tools. This was critical so that creative intent is assured and the scene by scene metadata is not erroenous. We last had to do this type of fix for Deepwater Horizon and 3:10 to Yuma specifically. The corrected dynamic metadata was subsequently added in along side the Dolby Vision MEL already present on the disc. In our own tests on top shelf calibrated displays the VOD HDR10+ layer does look a bit nicer than the DV MEL as color gradations are richer and contrast and highlights pop a bit more so if your TV supports both, the HDR10+ is what you want. YMMV.
Audio wise we checked all available sources and assets and what was on the UHD Blu-ray was really the best audio available. The same 5.1 remix done in 1999 was included by the studio on the UHD Blu-ray in lossless DTS-HD MA quality as well as a reformatted version of the 1968 magnetic multitrack stereo track from either the 35mm mag 4-track or 70mm 6-track (5 screen channel type) prints also in DTS-HD MA. The latter had a superfluous LFE channel which was empty and bloated the track by 300-400kbps so we decompressed it back to LPCM and re-encoded it losslessly back to DTS-HD MA but in its proper 5.0 container reflecting the actual channel count of this mix-- LCRLsRs.
Exclusively for this release we also included our custom reconstruction of the 35mm Academy Mono optical soundtrack provided on track 3 as we could not find it on any DVD or Blu-ray. This mix was derived from the studio's reformatted 1968 magnetic multitrack stereo mix transfer as it would have been the same, just purely monophonic with the Academy frequency response, reduced dynamic range and more nuanced gain. The vast majority of audiences would have seen the film this way in vanilla 35mm with Academy Mono sound as magnetic multitrack prints were reserved for special road show exhibitions and limited engagements. So it's there for posterity and for those of you that want to hear what the film would have sounded like in 1968 as heard by most audiences. Both the 5.1 remix and the adapted magentic multitrack mix are very good and each have their own merits. The biggest difference between the 2 mixes are placement of DME (dialog, music and effects), equalization of the soundtrack, dynamic range and overall gain. The studio may have taken some liberties with the levels a bit on both but overall nothing egregious. All 3 options are a fine listen.
Named chapters and commentary audio. Comm audio merely service kind flagged. Custom forced sub created for the two foreign parts, these are not translated in any of the existing subs on all retail releases we could find.
FRA BD ordered and checked incase it included the mono as a dual mono 2.0 track, but this was erroneous info from blu-ray.com, specifically the bitrate of the DD 2.0 track they specified indicating it potentially being different than the commentary audio.
Enjoy.
