D.R. Hooker was probably known to his neighbors in New Haven, Connecticut, as Crazy Donald. Or something like that. In 1972, he was a retired hippie, frightening the average person with his rather extravagant appearance, even for members of that community, of a biblical prophet in long, snow-white robes. Like any decent discharged soldier, he was a bit of an oddball—the astral projections of his circle, fueled by fun pills, had been replaced by the philosophy of Born Again Christianity. To express his feelings as a neophyte, Hooker recorded the album "The Truth," which was limited to 999 copies ("Truth is for the initiated...")—at that time, a somewhat old-fashioned psychedelic rock record with quasi-biblical lyrics. Now, this album is revered as one of the strangest artifacts of that era. Singer, guitarist, and composer Donald Hooker recorded two magnificent psychedelic albums. Both times, the band's lineups were different. "The Truth," released in 1972 on a small private label, is a gorgeous psychedelia with fuzz guitar and a superb vocal performance. The album has been reissued many times, but was repeatedly blocked from reissuing by major labels in the 1970s by church officials due to Hooker's portrayal of Christ and the album's lyrics, which ranged from biblical themes and hymns to drugs. The second album, "Armageddon," was recorded in 1974 but not released until 1979. Many critics consider D.R. Hooker's work to be vastly underrated, and each listen reveals something new
