Note : It's not October yet, but I figure we can do a soft kickoff of spooky season with some classic lighter fare, and this will do very nicely. While it's not Tim Burton's first major film, it's the first where the vision was mostly his own, and all the hallmarks of his signature style are on display here. It's mostly Michael Keaton's show, of course, and he makes the most out of his weird, disgusting character, marking a total change in his public image from his earlier comedy roles. The rest of the cast is also pretty stacked, including Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, Winona Ryder, Catherine O'Hara, everyone's favorite pedo Jeffrey Jones, Glenn Shadix, Sylvia Sidney, and Dick Cavett for some ungodly reason. The production design is top notch, contrasting Burton's grungy, hand-crafted Victorian maximalism with some eye-popping postmodernist architecture and interiors, which I think Burton probably hates, but which never the less look pretty great too. Just a near-perfect weirdo horror comedy through and through.
Adam and Barbara Maitland are a happy young couple living in a rambling country estate. One day, they get in a car accident avoiding a dog in the road, and unfortunately die, but come back as ghosts, now confined to the house by supernatural means. When a couple of yuppies, Charles Deetz and his wife Delia, buy the house and remodel it, the Maitlands begin to look for a way to scare them off, but get stuck in the afterlife's bureaucracy and come back to find three months have passed and the house is already remodeled. At the urging of their caseworker, they start haunting the new inhabitants, but are not particularly successful. The Deetz' teenage goth daughter, Lydia, can see them, because she's "peculiar", and she begins to sympathize with them. All hell breaks loose, however, when the Maitlands decide to enlist the help of Betelgeuse, a freelance "bio-exorcist", who turns out to be a crude bum with his own evil designs, especially on Lydia.
This is a great 4k remaster, with poppy color, excellent contrast, nice subtle grain, and great detail, and I think the SDR trimpass turned out very well, since the HDR grade was fairly moderate and tastefully done. The 7.1 track sounds good, the original Dolby Stereo as well, and while there are no official commentary tracks, the Jaboody track is about as amusing as you'd expect. There's also an ungodly number of subtitle tracks, just to round out the package. Pretty definitive, if I may say so myself.

Try searching for “hevk horror comedy” for more horrific fun, “hevk ghost” for more spirits of the dead refusing to leave, or “hevk 80s” for more from the decade when Tim Burton burst onto the scene with a fresh new aesthetic, and was not yet obsessed with Johnny Depp.Screenshots Mediainfo Code:General : Matroska / 11.4 GiB / 1 h 32 min / 17.8 Mb/s
