Worn out by alcohol and drugs, Beasts of Bourbon didn't survive their first album: it would take nearly four years for the band to get back on its feet, on crutches. But in the meantime, each of them found a spittoon in which to vent their love of the blues. Tex Perkins found new companions in Martin Bland and Lachlan McLeod to exorcise the ghosts of Captain Beefheart, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, and James Chance who came to visit him at night. Salamander Jim would have an even shorter life, but they managed to record barely twenty-five minutes of heartbreaking blues like "Lorne Green Shares His Precious Fluids."
No-wave and noise wrapped themselves like an abominable cocoon around the slimy larva of their swamp-rock, destined never to chrysalis but to devour itself in an attempt to survive a second night beyond the one fate had destined for it. Here, you can hear the noise it makes as it munches on its rotting body
