The Wailing (2016) aka Gokseong, directed by Na Hong-jin, hybrid remaster, encoded in 10 bit HEVC with AAC sound, including original Korean theatrical 7.1, three commentary tracks, and subtitles in twelve languages. Audio encoded separately with Apple AAC for the highest-quality AAC sound available. Text subtitles converted to SRT, image subtitles converted to VobSub and repositioned. Note : A do-over of a fairly early encode of mine, adding a new soundtrack and more subtitles, as well as higher bitrate. This film had been showing up on a lot of best of lists, and turned out to be quite a pleasant surprise, because it's pretty great. It's a mix of a lot of things, police procedural mystery, folk horror, demons and exorcisms, Korean folk religion clashing with Christianity, and even a bit of a viral zombie outbreak, with some kind of over the top comedy elements now and again, but it manages to be a lot more than the sum of its parts, and is both mysterious, creepily atmospheric, and at times shocking. Plus, all the visuals and practical effects are top notch. The cast is also great, headed up by Kwak Do-won, Hwang Jung-min, and Chun Woo-hee. This, by the way, would make an excellent double feature with Exhuma, which might be just the ticket if the downbeat ending to this one is too depressing. Set in a small, rainy town in Korea's rural south, the story concerns a cop who starts investigating a number of unexplained murders where people seemingly lost their mind and killed their families and neighbors. Soon, however, clues point to a mysterious Japanese tourist who's recently arrived in the area, and more worryingly, the protagonist's young daughter begins showing signs of supernatural infection. A local shaman is consulted, rituals are performed, but things go from bad to worse, and it's not at all clear who can be trusted and who's really a threat. A perfect Blu-Ray, as is common with new films, and with this new and improved encode, the very nice cinematography is pretty much perfectly preserved. The 7.1 track sounds great too, and all three commentary tracks are interesting. Hot tip Quote:HeVK torrents always have lots of keywords.
