RELEASE NOTES
Source #1: Shout! Factory UHD Blu-ray (video, surround audio, commentary, subtitles)
Source #2: Twilight Time USA Blu-ray (main mono audio, isolated score)
Source #3: MGM NTSC DVD (alternate mono audio, named chapters)
Source #4: Eureka! Masters of Cinema GBR Blu-ray (commentary, interview)
Source #5: Koch Media GER Blu-ray (subtitles)
Source #6: iTunes WEB-DL (subtitles)
Included proper stereo isolated score, original upload accidentally used a mono downmix, apologies.
Audio:
The original mix for this title is mono, IMDB's mention of an uncredited Dolby Stereo mix is wrong, or at least unsubstantiated (no source I can find mentions a stereo mix for this title, and no release includes one).
Unfortunately, there's no single good source for the mono mix, all the options come with more or less severe drawbacks.
• Shout Factory UHD only has a stereo downmix (which sounds muffled, as do the surround tracks)
• Twilight Time BD has the mono track with seemingly the best fidelity, but its dynamic range has been heavily compressed
• Eureka/MoC BD has a proper dynamics and good fidelity, but bizzarely, everything is repeated after a few miliseconds, rendering echoey and metallic (most pronounced on sample #1)
• MGM DVD has been denoised and has had a strong EQ applied and sounds muffled as a result, but also has proper dynamics
• Koch Media BD had poor dynamics and wrong pitch
• all other sources only offer the 5.1 upmix
I opted to include the two subjectively most adequate sources, with highest fidelity Twilight Time BD track as the main option and the DVD track as alternate. Although comparatively muffled, the DVD track is not too bad and still offers a punch from its dynamics.
My guess is that an earlier source like a LaserDisc would be the best, but I don't currently have it to compare, if it ever surfaces I will repack this release.
Comparisons: Samples, Waveforms, Spectrograms
Notes:
Preferred German subtitles from the older disc as the newer one lacks italics.
