In fact, what he does is take those moments of silent pause interspersed between action scenes in his previous films and make them the stylistic hallmark of an entire feature film. The result is a contemplative film about the sea, a recurring element in his films, but not only that: it is a film that is much less poetic and much more concrete than one might think; it says a lot about Japanese society, about the impossibility for a person of humble origins to rise in rank, about the lack of stimulation in modern Japan, about the uncontrolled urbanization and disfigurement of the natural beauty of the Asian country, about the malaise of contemporary Japanese life (and these are recurring themes in the director's filmography). The perspective with which they are approached is different from the usual: more stylized, not violent at all, far from any gender characterization, static (even in terms of camera movements, practically always fixed), essential, poor if you will. Curiously, the two protagonists arouse tenderness, but not empathy. They are figures without personality, necessary for the director to construct a general reflection on the relationship between man and the world, and between man and man: the violence of society on the individual (though never explicitly shown) causes the latter to flee into a single passion that becomes obsession, escape from reality, and oblivion.
