Spaceballs (1987), directed by Mel Brooks, Kino Lorber 4k restoration, encoded in 10 bit HEVC with AAC sound, including 5.1 remaster, director's commentary track, and subtitles in thirteen languages. Note : It's probably appropriate to upload this now, as Mel Brooks has recently announced he's doing a sequel (I'm cautiously optimistic). This is a straight parody of famous sci-fi movies, of course, mainly Star Wars, but also Alien, 2001, Planet of the Apes, and a bunch of other stuff. It's got rapid fire gags and a cast that's pretty stacked, including John Candy, Rick Moranis, Bill Pullman, Daphne Zuniga, Dick Van Patten, George Wyner, Michael Winslow, Joan Rivers, and John Hurt hilariously parodying his role in Alien. If you like Mel Brooks' style, you'll likely love this. The Spaceballs, led by president Skroob, have somehow managed to use up their atmosphere, and plot to steal that of a neighboring planet, the peaceful Druidia. On Druidia, spoiled princess Vespa is about to get married to the narcoleptic prince Valium, but flees, looking for true love. Her father, king Roland, hires mercenary Lone Starr and his canine-human hybrid companion Barf to find her, which Starr accepts, since he's being hunted by crime lord Pizza the Hutt, and desperately needs space bucks. They rescue the princess and her droid servant Dot Matrix just before they're captured by Spaceball One, commanded by Colonel Sandurz and the malevolent Dark Helmet, who wields the mystical power of The Schwartz. However, their winnebago space ship runs out of fuel, and the crash land on a desert planet, where they end up in the temple of Yogurt, a wise mystic who also hawks Spaceballs merchandise to the audience. The bad guys find them by watching a VHS tape of the movie and fast-forwarding to see where they are, and so... Well, just watch it, really. This is a very nice 4k remaster, not overly sharpened, very filmic color, fairly restrained grain, maybe a tad heavy on the blacks, but overall very pretty. 5.1 track also sounds good, and the Mel Brooks commentary track is a delight as usual.
