Description:

Orca (1977) aka The Killer Whale, directed by Michael Anderson, Kino Lorber 4k remaster, encoded in 10 bit HEVC with AAC sound, including 5.1 remaster, original theatrical mono, two commentary tracks, and subtitles in six languages. IMDb : https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076504/ Video encoded in two-pass 13.0 Mbps x265 10bit with the veryslow preset for archive quality image. Audio encoded separately with Apple AAC for the highest-quality AAC sound available. Text subtitles converted to SRT, image subtitles converted to VobSub and repositioned. Note : The release and massive success of Jaws inevitably led to a flurry of imitators, and here's one that's not much seen these days, which is kind of a shame, because it's got a few things going for it. The cast, headed up by Richard Harris and Charlotte Rampling, with solid backing by Will Sampson, Bo Derek, Keenan Wynn, and Robert Carradine, is much better than it needs to be, and it has some very nice cinematography and scenery. Still, the story, which is more Ahab-like than Jaws, isn't the greatest, and there's a lack of action, despite some good set pieces and a pretty decent ending. Good thing Orcas moved on from personal grudges in the 70s to collective action and propaganda of the deed in later decades, I guess. An Irish-Canadian fisherman in Newfoundland who's hunting sharks for an aquarium gets a hardon for orcas, and decides they must fetch more money than sharks. When he's trying to harpoon one, he accidentally strikes a pregnant orca, which dies on board the boat after miscarrying, and as the fetus is flushed overboard, the male orca swears revenge. The subsequente roaring rampage of revenge systematically kills the boat's first mate, sinks the boat, ruins fishing for everyone in the village, sinking fishing boats, rupturing underwater pipelines, and causing an entire house to collapse into the sea. Ahab lite gets help from a local cetologist, and has mixed feelings about the whole endeavor, since he too has lost loved ones, but the conflict goes on, and eventually leads everyone to a fateful confrontation in the Arctic ice. This is a quite nice 4k remaster, showing off the pretty cinematography. Daylight scenes are pretty much all perfect, despite some inconsistent lighting here and there, although the underwater stuff is inevitably murky, and some of the night scenes have very crushed blacks. All in all, though, it's a good view. Both the 5.1 remaster and the original mono sound quite good, and the commentary tracks are there if you're really that interested in this film. Try searching for “hevk natural horror” for more conflict between man and nature, “hevk rm4k” for more 4k remasters, or “hevk 70s” for more from the decade when Jaws invented the concept of the summer blockbuster, and a lot of innocent actors got eaten by giant animals for it.Screenshots Mediainfo Code:General : Matroska / 9.2 GiB / 1 h 32 min / 14.2 Mb/s Video : HEVC / Main10@L4@High / 13.0 Mb/s / 1920 x 812 pixels / 2.35:1 / 23.976 FPS / *Default Writing library : x265 4.1+1-1d117be:[Linux][GCC 14.2.0][64 bit] 10bit Encoding settings : cpuid=1111039 / frame-threads=5 / wpp / pmode / pme / no-psnr / no-ssim / log-level=2 / input-csp=1 / input-res=1920x812 / interlace=0 / total-frames=0 / level-idc=0 / high-tier=1 / uhd-bd=0 / ref=5 / no-allow-non-conformance / no-repeat-headers / annexb / no-aud / no-eob / no-eos / no-hrd / info / hash=0 / temporal-layers=0 / open-gop / min-keyint=24 / keyint=240 / gop-lookahead=0 / bframes=8 / b-adapt=2 / b-pyramid / bframe-bias=0 / rc-lookahead=40 / lookahead-slices=0 / scenecut=40 / no-hist-scenecut / radl=0 / no-splice / no-intra-refresh / ctu=64 / min-cu-size=8 / rect / amp / max-tu-size=32 / tu-inter-depth=3 / tu-intra-depth=3 / limit-tu=0 / rdoq-level=2 / dynamic-rd=0.00 / no-ssim-rd / signhide / no-tskip / nr-intra=0 / nr-inter=0 / no-constrained-intra / strong-intra-smoothing / max-merge=5 / limit-refs=0 / no-limit-modes / me=3 / subme=4 / merange=57 / temporal-mvp / no-frame-dup / no-hme / weightp / weightb / no-analyze-src-pics / deblock=0:0 / sao / no-sao-non-deblock / rd=6 / selective-sao=4 / no-early-skip / rskip / no-fast-intra / no-tskip-fast / no-cu-lossless / b-intra / no-splitrd-skip / rdpenalty=0 / psy-rd=2.00 / psy-rdoq=1.00 / no-rd-refine / no-lossless / cbqpoffs=0 / crqpoffs=0 / rc=abr / bitrate=13000 / qcomp=0.60 / qpstep=4 / stats-write=0 / stats-read=2 / cplxblur=20.0 / qblur=0.5 / ipratio=1.40 / pbratio=1.30 / aq-mode=3 / aq-strength=1.00 / cutree / zone-count=0 / no-strict-cbr / qg-size=32 / no-rc-grain / qpmax=69 / qpmin=0 / no-const-vbv / sar=1 / overscan=0 / videoformat=5 / range=0 / colorprim=1 / transfer=1 / colormatrix=1 / chromaloc=1 / chromaloc-top=0 / chromaloc-bottom=0 / display-window=0 / cll=0,0 / min-luma=0 / max-luma=1023 / log2-max-poc-lsb=8 / vui-timing-info / vui-hrd-info / slices=1 / no-opt-qp-pps / no-opt-ref-list-length-pps / no-multi-pass-opt-rps / scenecut-bias=0.05 / no-opt-cu-delta-qp / no-aq-motion / no-hdr10 / no-hdr10-opt / no-dhdr10-opt / no-idr-recovery-sei / analysis-reuse-level=0 / analysis-save-reuse-level=0 / analysis-load-reuse-level=0 / scale-factor=0 / refine-intra=0 / refine-inter=0 / refine-mv=1 / refine-ctu-distortion=0 / no-limit-sao / ctu-info=0 / no-lowpass-dct / refine-analysis-type=0 / copy-pic=1 / max-ausize-factor=1.0 / no-dynamic-refine / no-single-sei / no-hevc-aq / no-svt / no-field / qp-adaptation-range=1.00 / scenecut-aware-qp=0conformance-window-offsets / right=0 / bottom=0 / decoder-max-rate=0 / no-vbv-live-multi-pass / no-mcstf / no-sbrc / no-frame-rc Audio #1 : AAC LC / 676 kb/s / 6 channels / 5.1 remaster / English / *Default Audio #2 : AAC LC / 246 kb/s / 1 channel / Original theatrical mono / English Audio #3 : AAC LC / 122 kb/s / 2 channels / Commentary by film historians Howard S.
