Description:

The Straight Story (1999), directed by David Lynch, Arthaus 4k remaster, encoded in 10 bit HEVC with AAC sound, including "revived" 5.1 remaster, original theatrical 5.1, commentary track, and subtitles in eleven languages. IMDb : https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0166896/ Video encoded in two-pass 13.0 Mbps x265 10bit with the veryslow preset for archive quality image. Audio encoded separately with Apple AAC for the highest-quality AAC sound available. Text subtitles converted to SRT, image subtitles converted to VobSub and repositioned. Note : What would a David Lynch movie that Disney would distribute, look like? No one really asked that question, but here's the answer anyway, a touching, beautiful biographical roadmovie about old age, forgiveness, and just plain stubbornness, and it's pretty great, from the amazing performances to the authentic-feeling dialog to the beautiful landscape photography. The fantastic cast includes Richard Farnsworth, Sissy Spacek, Harry Dean Stanton, and Everett McGill. Just watch this, you won't regret it. Alvin Straight, an old man living in Iowa, fails to show up to his regular bar meeting with friends, and they find him on his kitchen floor, having fallen. A doctor admonishes him to quit smoking, eat healthier, and start using a walker, but he refuses. Soon after, Alvin learns that his estranged brother Lyle has had a stroke, and he decides to visit him, since they haven't spoken in ten years. Alvin doesn't have a driver's license, so he resolves to use his riding lawn mower to drive 240 miles to Wisconsin, towing a home made trailer. This quickly fails, the mower breaking down, but he's determined to make the trip, and buys a used tractor to use to haul the trailer instead. Along the way, Alvin meets a number of very different people, including a young, pregnant runaway, a group of bicycling enthusiasts, a woman who's distraught after hitting a deer with her car, a group of people in a town who help him fix his tractor, and a Catholic priest. We also learn details about Alvin's life, his background in WWII, and the possible reason he fell out with his brother, although it's never stated explicitly. This is a very nice looking 4k remaster, with poppy color and great contrast, tight, constrained grain, though it's a bit variable and becomes more present in certain scenes, and nice detail. Both the 5.1 tracks sound good, I think it's a matter of taste which one you prefer, and unusually with a Lynch film, we get a commentary track. Not much to complain about in general here, just a good transfer of a good film. Hot tip
